Attraction
Pittsburgh is for the birds … well, at least at the National Aviary located on the city’s north side. The aviary is home to more than 600 exotic and endangered birds.
A similar site, the relatively new PPG Aquarium is located at the Pittsburgh Zoo. The 45,000-square-foot facility has more than 40 aquatic exhibits. The zoo itself, more than 100 years old, is located on 77 acres and features a variety of threatened and endangered species.
The city is also fortunate to be the home of one of the largest and oldest Victorian-style greenhouses in the U.S. It is located at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens and Garden Place.
Each Memorial Day, Pittsburgh celebrates its diverse ethnic heritage. The city’s Folk Festival features the music, crafts, food and entertainment of 20 different ethnic groups.
Pittsburgh’s Children’s Museum has a variety of exhibits, but one of most popular is Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood. Fred Rogers, the man who made cardigan sweaters and slippers popular on PBS, was born in nearby Latrobe, Pa.
