Seven Fortune 500 companies make their home in the city, but it is health care, education and the financial sector that are the leading employers. The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center employs 27,000 people from Pittsburgh and its suburbs, and the Western Pennsylvania Health Systems employs another 10,000. Pitt employs 10,000 and PNC Financial Services and Mellon Financial have about 7,000 employees each.
Fortune 500 companies in the city include USX (successor to U.S. Steel), ALCOA, H.J. Heinz, PPG Industries, PNC Financial, Mellon Financial and Wesco. Also located in Pittsburgh are such recognizable names as FedEx Ground, American Eagle Outfitters and Rockwell International.
