The Cathedral of Learning

Pittsburgh is blessed with an abundance of colleges and universities.

Certainly the University of Pittsburgh is the largest with 32,300 students, including about 14,500 undergrads, and more than 9,000 faculty members. The state-affiliated college is located in the Oakland section of the city, and is one of the leading employers in the city.

Another well known institution in Pittsburgh is Carnegie Mellon University. This college of more than 10,000 students is a drawing card for those who want to study or do research in the high tech fields, especially robotics.

Also calling Pittsburgh home is Duquesne University. The Catholic college with about 9,500 students is one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the country.

Allegheny County Community College has more than 15,000 students and provides a great deal of vocational training for the city’s businesses.

Other colleges in Pittsburgh include Point Park, LaRoche, Chatham and Carlow colleges. All are small, private colleges.

The city also has an art school, a culinary institute and a variety of small schools in the nursing and health technology fields.
